چکیده

Clouds are important players in the global radiation budget with low-level water clouds being one of the most influential types. Classified as stratocumulus and stratus, these water clouds cover 34% of oceans and 18% of land at any given time (Considine et al. 1997). A 50% plus global coverage, a high albedo when compared to the ocean, and temperatures comparable to the surface causes the low stratiform clouds to provide about 60% of the annually averaged net cloud radiative forcing (Hartmann et al. 1992). Therefore, variations in low cloud cover may have a significant impact on climate change. Additionally, changes in the microphyical properties of stratiform cloud quantified by the liquid water path (LWP) and size distribution may result in changes in albedo. This change in albedo, as a result of changes in microphysics, can impact climate change even if variations in cloud cover do not occur. Our goal is to study variations in the microphysical properties of stratus and their effect on solar radiation, thereby providing an assessment of the comparative importance of the various parameters, defining the warm cloud microphysics. We make use of data from the Southern Great Plains (SGP) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) site Central Facility (CF) as we require a statistically significant sample size for our study.

Doppler Radar and Microwave Radiometer Derived Stratus Cloud Particle Size Distributions

Some earlier studies demonstrate that the size distribution of stratus cloud particles can be retrieved using radar reflectivity factor from millimeter-wave cloud radar and liquid water path estimated from microwave radiometer radiance measurements (White et al. 1991; Frisch et al. 1995, 1998). One source of error in these retrievals is the use of a climatological value for the geometric standa...

Liquid Water Cloud Retrievals - A Bayesian Approach

We developed a new algorithm to retrieve properties of non-precipitating liquid water clouds from millimeter wave radar and Microwave Radiometer (MWR) data using Bayes’ theorem of conditional probability. Bayes’ theorem relates the inverse problem (retrieving cloud properties from remotesensing observations) to the forward problem (modeling remote-sensing observations given a set of cloud prope...

Evaluating the accuracy of parameterizations for effective cloud fractions for small cumulus clouds in the longwave using ARM data

This work is based on measurements made at the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains (SGP) central facility from April through June 1997. Five instruments of the ARM SGP central facility have principal roles in this study. The millimeter wave cloud radar (MMCR) is used to measure N and β. The microwave radiometer (MWR) is used to determine when water clouds are overhead;...

Intercomparisons Between Remote and In Situ Measurements of Ice Cloud Microphysics During the Spring 1997 Cloud IOP

The spring 1997 Cloud Intensive Observation Period (IOP) was conducted at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) Cloud and Radiation Testbed (CART) site during April 1997. The objectives of this IOP included comprehensive testing of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program’s millimeter-wave cloud radar (MMCR) and verifications of several cloud retrieval algorithms by comparisons of the remo...

The Statistical Formulations of Cloud Inhomegeneity Parameters Over the Southern Great Plains

Lack of data on cloud variability is one of the main reasons most current climate models consider clouds as plane-parallel, horizontally homogeneous combinations of cloudy and clear portions defined by cloud fraction. Accounting for cloud inhomogeneity should significantly increase the accuracy of calculations of radiative properties. Unique information on cloud internal variability can be obta...
